Deputy Dominique “Dom” Calata, 35, died Wednesday afternoon at St. Joseph Medical Heart in Tacoma. Calata had been with the Sheriff’s Division for six 1/2 years and was assigned to patrol with the Edgewood Police Division.
He was an Military veteran and had served within the Nationwide Guard for the previous seven years.
He leaves behind a spouse and a younger son.
“We’re heartbroken to tell our neighborhood that Deputy Dom Calata has handed away,” the Sheriff’s Division stated in a tweet. “Our division members stay grateful for the outpouring of help now we have acquired. Please preserve Deputy Calata’s household in your prayers throughout this tough time.”
Calata and Sgt. Wealthy Scaniffe, 45, have been wounded when members of the Pierce County SWAT group went in to arrest an assault suspect in a cellular residence park close to Spanaway. The 40-year-old assault suspect was killed when gunfire erupted throughout a SWAT operation.
The suspect was pronounced useless on the scene, which police stated was a cellular residence park within the 19000 block of Pacific Avenue South.
The suspect was being sought on a warrant for second-degree assault when the South Sound Gang Job Power discovered him Tuesday morning on the Pacific Avenue South property, stated Wendy Haddow, public info officer for the Tacoma Police Division. Due to the suspect’s earlier felony convictions, the duty pressure requested the Pierce County Sheriff’s Division for help in making the arrest, Haddow stated.
The person, who police stated had prior felony convictions, was believed to be a candidate for the three strikes regulation. Which means he would have confronted life in jail if convicted of one other crime.
The 2 wounded deputies have been taken to St. Joseph Medical Heart with life-threatening accidents, in keeping with a information launch issued Tuesday on behalf of the Pierce County Power Investigation Staff, which is investigating the capturing.
Scaniffe is a 21-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Division and is assigned to the Mountain Detachment. He has been a member of the SWAT group for 14 years and has been the group’s commander for the previous yr. He’s married with a younger daughter.
He was in steady situation on Wednesday.
The Seattle Police Division and different native companies tweeted their condolences after information broke that Calata had died.
Chris Barringer, a patrol deputy with the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Workplace in Bend, Oregon, graduated from the police academy with Calata in 2016 and the 2 remained mates. Barringer, who served as chief of workers to former King County Sheriff John Urquhart, stated Calata was the neatest, most disciplined and properly ready of their classmates — and he was voted the individual they might most need to associate with.
“Everybody needed Dominique [as a partner], together with me,” Barringer stated. “He was one of the best of us.”
